Axion quality problem alleviated by nonminimal coupling to gravity

Global symmetries are expected to be violated by gravity, which may cause a serious problem models based on these symmetries. A famous example is the Peccei-Quinn solution strong CP in QCD axion models; it requires global U(1) symmetry respected with high quality, and even Planck-scale suppressed operators that violate would spoil this solution. Indeed, known gravitational instantons do break induce U(1)-violating operators, bringing back models. This conclusion is, however, dependent highly structure of theory around Planck scale and, therefore, evaded if we go beyond minimal setup. In paper, study effect non-minimal coupling field $\xi$, instanton effect. setup frequently considered cosmology as can realize successful inflation $\xi \lesssim 10^5$.
